Dressmaking at Oh Sew Sweet Mailchimp header

Hi Lovely,

Over the next few months I’ll be hosting a range of workshops at Oh Sew Sweet in Wombwell, near Barnsley to help you build a capsule wardrobe collection of me made clothes from a range of Sew to Grow Patterns.

Sew to Grow patterns are designed to help you get great fitting me-made clothes that will build your body confidence as well as your sewing confidence with the Fit to Flatter pattern adaption techniques that will help you understand your body shape better and how to adapt patterns to fit.

Each month we will make a different garment together and will learn new skills and techniques and will help your confidence as a dressmaker soar! Designed as a course of workshops; each month we will build on the skills learnt before. For best results book the full course or dip in and book to make one off garments that you will love.

Oh Sew Sweet are now stocking a small range of dressmaking patterns specially selected to compliment the Sew to Grow patterns. See in store for more info or to get advice on suitable fabrics.

  • February – Saturday 23rd – Stella Skirt
  • March – Saturday 30th – Seoul Blossom Blouse
  • April – Saturday 27th – Fremantle Frock
  • May – Saturday 25th – Bespoke Blazer
  • June – Saturday 29th – Bondi Top

Bespoke Blazer – Saturday 25th May

Dress to impress, day or night, in the Bespoke Blazer. Make the 3/4 sleeve version out of rayon for a flirty casual feel, or use a structured linen for a posh polished look. The back seaming contours to create a figure flattering shape, and the front panels cascade back to reveal the lining. Great opportunity to add a pop of colour! Style the Bespoke Blazer with your favourite pair of jeans, a smart dress, or a great skirt/top combo to make this style uniquely yours.

Bespoke Blazer

May – Saturday 25th – Bespoke Blazer

This workshop is £59 and includes your copy of the Sew to Grow Pattern (RRP £18).

Fabric Requirements:

  • 2m (45”(115cm)/60”(150cm) wide) fabric

  • 0.75m (45”(115cm)/60”(150cm) wide) fabric for lining. This will be seen on the collar, so it should either be the same fabric or a coordinating fabric of a similar weight.
  • Matching thread

Fabric suggestions:

Medium weight cotton and other structured fabrics such as chambray, linen and quilting cotton.

Past events:

Stella Skirt – Saturday 23rd February:

Inspired by the effortlessly chic styles of the 1960’s, the Stella Skirt features exposed topstitched pockets, chunky belt loops, and a thick hem for an added retro flare. Mix and Match your prints to create a whole new look or keep it clean and simple with a stone washed linen or thick wale cord.

This skirt comes in two lengths. The above the knee version (mini) and below the knee (midi). It’s a simple shape skirt, but with lots of room to add personal touches like adding piping to the front panel or pockets.

This workshop is £59 and includes your copy of the Sew to Grow Pattern (RRP £18).

Fabric Requirements:

  • Mini Skirt (above knee) – (45”(115cm)/60”(150cm)wide) – 1.5m
  • Midi Skirt (below knee) – (45”(115cm)/60”(150cm)wide) – 1.75m
  • 25m lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 9” invisible zip
  • Matching thread

Fabric suggestions:

Linen, corduroy, denim and other medium weight woven fabrics.

Seoul Blossom Blouse – Saturday 30th March :

The feminine details and soft silhouette of the Seoul Blossom Blouse are inspired by my time discovering the wonders and beauty of South Korea. This top features flattering front diamond darts, V-Neck, and a curved back hem with side slits making it perfect for the “french tuck”. The optional bow cuff completes the design making this the top you’ve been looking for to add to your handmade wardrobe.

“When I travel around teaching workshops, I always have women asking me for the “Perfect” garment. They want sleeves, something to cover their bum, a little bit of shape, not to tight around the hips etc… and I took all this into account when designing this new top.

There are two sleeve length options, 3/4 and full length. You can also choose to add or eliminate the bow tie cuff. It is super cute, but just watch out it doesn’t dip into your guacamole. (Ask me how I know…)

The front diamond darts are perfect for adding a little bit of shape. You can also leave out the darts for a looser fitting top. The back slightly dips lower than the front, with an added side split hem to give a little extra room through the hips.

I think this top would also look great lengthened into a tunic or dress. I haven’t had a chance to do it yet, but I’m dying to see someone try it. I bet it will look

  • Matching thread

Fabric suggestions:

Light weight rayon, lawn, voile, Tencel, or other light weight woven materials.

Fremantle Frock – Saturday 27th April:

The Fremantle Frock is a clever design that will certainly fit to flatter any shape! This dress features contouring princess lines down the front of the dress, with some sneaky hidden pockets. A simple curved hem also gives this frock a bit of added flare and is perfectly suited for quilting weight cottons, chambray and Japanese linens.

Autumn Cosy – October 2017 Workshops

October 17 Mailchimp header

I can’t believe it’s already October and I haven’t told you all about October’s fabulous Autumn wardrobe workshops yet.

I’ve got a return of the Tilly & the Buttons Agnes Jersey Top Workshop in Swinton on Saturday 14th October. For this workshop, all your fabric is included (from a special selection from Thread Mill Fabrics), as well as your Tilly & the Buttons multi size pattern.

Here I am in the long sleeved version pointing at this fabric in the shop.

In this workshop, you will learn how to cut out and sew with jersey fabric and make one of the different versions of this fabulous top.

There are short or long sleeves, ruched, puff sleeves or straight sleeves, with a ruched neckline or scoop. The choice is yours to make the version that suits you.

Book Agnes Jersey Top Workshop Here – Pay £15 deposit

On Wednesday 18th October (6.30-8.30pm) I will be holding a brand new workshop to help you read and understand dressmaking patterns.

If you pick up a dressmaking pattern and it’s like reading a foreign language to you or you just can’t figure out the right size or how much fabric you need and what all the symbols on all that tissue paper actually mean – join me at this workshop for it to all make sense.

Book the Read & Understand Patterns Workshop here – £25

Then on Saturday 21st October in Bawtry I will be holding a grand celebration for my first year in business and participating in Sew Magazine’s Sew Saturday.

The full day workshop will be making the Patterns for Pirates Cocoon Cardigan, £55 including a multi size pattern. Fabric is not included for this workshop, allowing you to make something perfectly suited for your style, Full guidance will be given on booking. £15 deposit secures your space.

Again this pattern has lots of options, for a cropped or tunic version (mine is a tunic) and short or long sleeves and a narrow or wider band. It’s also a jersey fabric, so you will learn how to cut and sew with jersey.

Since I made this sample last week I have worn this cardi every day, it’s such a good autumn wardrobe staple and so comfy too!

If you can’t attend the whole workshop, do pop in and join the party, get a free goody bag and a slice of cake and see what a Bagladybird – Learn to Sew workshop is all about.

Last but not least in October I’ll be hosting an upcycling workshop in Austerfield on Wednesday 25th October (7-9pm), as the weather’s getting chillier we’ll be upcycling your jumpers into winter woolies, (option for hat, scarf or fingerless mittens).

Keep them for yourself or give them to your loved ones for Christmas. This workshop is £25 per person and you will turn something old into something new & fabulous.
